2015 Tacoma Studio Tour Preview: Part 2

26 Aug

This is part 2 in our series highlighting the artists participating in the Tacoma Studio Tour this October.

This year’s tour features 57 artists and collaborative studios and allows the general public the opportunity to see the spaces in and tools with which local artists create their work, ask questions, and purchase one-of-a-kind creations. All studios will feature demonstrations of the artistic process or will have hands-on activities for visitors.

And, something new this year – your Tacoma Studio Tour Passport! Collect a stamp at each studio location you visit and once you’ve collected at least 8 stamps, send us the passport and you’ll be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of several fabulous prize packages containing artwork hand-crafted by a selection of artists on the tour including: David Bader, Terry A Bader, Ann Darling, Michaela Eaves, Anne Elrod, Jennifer English, Lynne Farren, Maeve Harris, Hilltop Artists, Fumiko Kimura, L. Here are this week’s highlights:

Mark Hoppmann

Mark Hoppmann has always been curious. That curiosity has resulted in an eclectic accumulation of bric-a-brac, memories, experiences, and books, all which, in turn, inspire his art. With apologies to Rudyard Kipling, his intent is to design illustrated books for those “with satiable curtiosity.” Simple and sometimes unadorned, but thoughtfully creative book designs hide a treasury of illustrations within.

Bill Colby
Bird Strata, 2013, 13 1/2 x 9, woodcut, acrylic Birds 15IMG_1017 Water Strata II, 2015, Woodcut/watercolor,acrylic, 11x16
Bill Colby uses woodcut blocks with oil inks and watercolor in bright colors to create expressive or emotional landscapes. Birds on branches in a variety of landscapes are featured in his newest work.

Terry A Bader

Terry Bader has painted for over thirty years. She works in her home studio and specializes in realistic watercolors of Northwest scenes with people and objects that have compelling lighting. Terry experiments with collage in her work and enjoys pastel as well. She has won numerous awards at the Washington State Fair and sold through several local galleries.

David Bader

David Bader is an art teacher and student. His work is assembled from found objects and repurposed materials found locally and created in his studio. David is a native of Tacoma and enjoys referencing images and ideas in his work.

Dorothy McCuistion, Designs Two

Dorothy McCuistion uses a variety of printmaking techniques to layer shapes, textures, and colors of plants, animals, and places to create images where they merge. She creates both monotypes, print editions, and handmade books. Fusing the local with the foreign, the personal with the universal, her artwork comments on topics ranging from human environmental impact to the fusion of cultures in contemporary society.

Lorraine Toler & Benjamin Davis
Toler_Davis_Year of the Sheep Davis_North End Gothic 2015-04-12 16.16.28
Ben Davis and Lorraine Toler call the second floor of their east Tacoma home Sweetrain Studios. It is a place where they work on individual pieces and collaborate on others. Lorraine mainly paints with acrylics and Ben often uses oils although both artists paint, draw, sketch, jianzhi, street chalk, take photos, and use many mediums.

Juan La Torre, La Torre Art Studio
DUENDES METAMORPH FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Juan La Torre is an award-winning artist who believes that creativity, organized through art, can help the world heal. Art is not just a momentary creation, it comes from our past and continues to create awareness of who we are into the future. Juan comes from the South American country of Peru and has lived in the United States for the last 18 years.
