If raw experience is the stuff of novels, then some bruising discoveries await in Hustle, by Tacoma writer Jason Skipper. It took Skipper nine years to write his semi-autobiographical novel published in 2011 by literary publishing house, Press 53. He will read from and sign Hustle this Friday, at 7 pm at King’s Books.

Hustle is a coming-of-age story set in a world of hard-edged, dysfunctional adults: drunken, depressed, wife-cheating. Skipper draws from his own experiences growing up in small-town Texas to create a vivid picture of an existence somewhere beyond life’s comfort zone. Hustle was selected as a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award for Fiction.

Skipper, a teacher of creative writing and literature at Pacific Lutheran University, has received awards and recognition from Zoetrope: All Story, Crab Orchard Review and Glimmer Train, with grants from Artist Trust of Washington and the Vermont Studio Center.

The Tacoma Arts Commission is proud to support Jason Skipper’s work through the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program.
