A very cool winter tradition is coming back to town: Franciscan Polar Plaza, the covered, open-air ice rink in the heart of downtown Tacoma opens this coming Friday! Beginning November 23 through January 6, 2013, all are invited to lace up their skates (rentals available) and take to the ice. Are you an Apolo Ohno in the making or just learning to keep those ankles straight? Personally, we can’t think of a more fun, madly exasperating form of exertion. Keep an eye open for special themed nights, live music, art activities, and more!
Dress cozy and come down to Tollefson Plaza across from Tacoma Art Museum to check out the upgraded arena. The rink will be 20% larger than last year. The seating area will also be larger so more skaters and their friends and family can join the fun. There will be music and steamy, hand-warming refreshments such as hot chocolate for sale. You could even go home with a holiday tree purchased at 25Trees. Ice Rink Events staff will also be on the ice to help keep the skaters stay merry.
New to this year’s holiday tradition is the Polar Plaza Express, a small train that visitors ride from the Washington State History Museum to Tacoma Art Museum. The train will roll down Pacific Avenue from December 21 to the 24 as well as December 26, 10 am to 5 pm (closing early at 1 pm on December 24).
Admission to the skating rink will be $8 and $2 for skate rental. Military members and seniors (65+) receive $1 off admission. Skates will be available in a variety of sizes, from a child’s size 8 through an adult size 14.
Riders on the Polar Plaza Express train may hop on board for $2 each way; there’s a discounted rate of $1 for members of the Washington State History Museum and Tacoma Art Museum.Franciscan Health System, Tacoma Art Museum, Columbia Bank, Titus-Will and Korsmo Construction are generous supporters of this year’s event.
