Hawaiian Music Legend Brings Aloha Spirit to Tacoma

21 May

First Night Tacoma is presenting Hawaiian music legend, Brother Noland, at the Rialto Theater on May 25. As anyone who has reveled in T-town streets on Dec. 31 in the last 18 years knows, First Night is Tacoma’s reigning New Year’s Eve blowout – a major arts showcase, a family-friendly festival (one of 300+ in the nationwide First Night universe) and the Big Kahuna of downtown celebrations. In an effort to create a more inclusive event, the organizers are reaching out to various cultural groups in the area, and hosting the contemporary Hawaiian musician and songwriter is a first step.

“Our long-term goal [is] that the whole South Sound community will feel deeply connected to one another through this kick-off event of the year,” said First Night Co-Executive Director, Lance Kagey. “We have made it our priority, this year, to reach out to the Pacific Islander community, as well as the larger Asia-Pacific community. With that in mind, we have brought Brother Noland from Hawaii to do a special concert and inspirational talk for our youth. Friday, May 25, Brother Noland will share his unique talent with us. We are hoping to get the word out to the various community organizations….We also will make special arrangements to make sure everyone who would like to attend the 6:15 Lessons of Aloha-Leadership for Pacific Islander Youth can do so regardless of available funds.”

The evening’s schedule is as follows:
6:15 pm: Lessons of Aloha-Leadership for Pacific Islander Youth (all community youth welcome) call 206-551-3244 for group rates and discounts
7:30 pm: Concert
9 pm: Meet and greet with Brother Noland
Tickets are $25, available at http://www.broadwaycenter.org
