Career Skills for Artists: Arts Symposium – Nov. 19 & 20

26 Oct

If you haven’t heard, the Arts Symposium is back and we’re here to bring you the the lowdown, as well as a few tips to keep in mind! Part of Art at Work Month, the two-day event is dedicated to providing local artists and arts organizations with nuts-and-bolts information in order to become and remain successful in the arts. We’ve got exciting conversations, workshops, and panels lined up to help you push your arts career to the next level. This year, we’ll have a keynote address by Gigi Rosenberg, author of The Artist’s Guide to Grant Writing. Get a taste of Gigi’s speaking style in this great video from her website:

Her keynote alone will make it worth your while! Some of the other sessions we’ll be holding this year include Marketing with Social Media, Fund Your Projects: Grant Writing for the Visual, Literary and Performing Artist, Engaging with Youth in the Arts, and Public Art Perspectives. For a full list of sessions and their descriptions, visit the Symposium page at

Tip #1: There’s a lot going on, so make sure you don’t sign up for overlapping sessions!

While you’re here, you’ll probably have a little bit of downtime between sessions. So, take advantage of a FREE 15-minute portfolio review! More details are also on the website. All you have to do is sign up with Naomi (253.591.5191) and show up with your images.

In addition to all of this, there will also be two low-cost, one-on-one, confidential consultation clinics this year: Shunpike is offering an Arts Business Clinic on Saturday, Nov 19 and Washington Lawyers for the Arts is offering an Arts Legal Clinic on Sunday, Nov 20. Clinics are $20 for a 30-minute session. To register for the Arts Business Clinic, call Naomi at 253.591.5191. To register for the Arts Legal Clinic, call Washington Lawyers for the Arts at 206.328.7053.

Tip #2: Come prepared – don’t forget your notebook and pen, grab your water bottle, and a handful of business cards won’t hurt either!

We’ve got a few different pricing options this year, too. It’s $20 for unlimited sessions both days, $12 for unlimited sessions on either Saturday or Sunday only, or $7 for one individual session. Financial assistance is available; please call Naomi at 253.591.5191.

Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Register for all general sessions online at

Tip #3: If you’re staying for the whole day, make sure you bring a sack lunch. Or you can hop over to the UPS cafeteria and grab a bite there!

So sign up now before all the spots are filled! Again, just click on the EventBrite link to access the registration page. See you in a few weeks!
