“The Sound of Music” returns – long live Julie Andrews

22 Nov
If you love The Sound of Music and know the words to every song; if you played the original Rodgers and Hammerstein vinyl until it was worn thin (you know who you are); if you think dirndls deserve a second chance; then this is your weekend as not one but TWO Sound of Music productions are in town!

For one day only, Saturday, November 24, the Broadway Center presents The Sound of Music Sing Along followed by the 67th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting. See the original 1965 movie on the big screen and sing to your heart’s delight with the Von Trapp family. This event promises to be the coolest thing since Handel’s Sing-It-Yourself Messiah! Film screens at 2 pm at the Pantages. Tickets: $24. At 5:30 pm, it’s time for the annual holiday tree lighting outside the Pantages – a Tacoma tradition for more than six decades, and it’s free. Broadway Center, 901 Broadway, Tacoma. Phone 253.591.5890. http://www.broadwaycenter.org

The Sound of Music was the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein, and remains one of the world’s most beloved musicals. You can catch it at Tacoma Musical Playhouse (TMP) now through December 16.

TMP has put together a memorable production of this family classic. “Maria” will be played by Marissa Ryder, whom theatergoers may remember from TMP’s productions of South Pacific and Nine; the “Captain” will be played by TMP newcomer Jonathan Bills. The supporting cast includes Karen Early Evans and Lisa Ganung alternating in the role of the “Mother Abbess”, and two casts of Von Trapp children. Little “Gretl” from a production 10 years ago, Sophia Lewis, returns in this production as “Liesl”.

The matinee shows are popular and TMP has already added an extra 2 pm performance on Saturday, November 24th. All seats are reserved, and advanced purchase is recommended. Group Rates are available.
